She tweeted: ‘I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment. Donald J Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate. We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.’
Omar’s efforts were supported by her fellow Democrat Representative Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan. Wisconsin’s attorney general Josh Kaul, a Democrat, has also called for Trump’s removal as soon as Biden’s win is certified, after branding the president a ‘facist.’
If the House of Representatives – which has a Democrat majority – voted to impeach Trump, he would then be tried before the US Senate.
The Senate currently has a Republican majority – although it is expected to be flipped by the Democrats thanks to two elections in Georgia its candidates are on course to win.
That could subsequently see senators vote to ‘convict’ Trump of the articles he faces, and remove him from office.
A conviction would not result in any punishment beyond the president’s removal from office, but Trump could be pursued by prosecutors after he leaves office.
Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated on January 20, and it is unclear if representatives would be able to organize an impeachment hearing in the time he has remaining.
If they were able to do so, Vice President Mike Pence would serve as president until Biden’s inauguration.
Wednesday’s riots were triggered by Congress’s certification of Joe Biden as president. The ceremony is a formality which sees previously authenticated electoral college votes counted, but President Trump repeatedly called on his political allies and Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the result.
Pence refused to do so, although objections to Biden’s win during Wednesday’s certification triggered a debate which was interrupted by the rioters. That saw Pence and his colleagues rushed to safety, while pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, smashed windows and entered the Senate and House chambers themselves.
